Versatile Forward Dean Wade Expected to Draw Significant Free-Agency Interest

The Cleveland Cavaliers want to keep Dean Wade, and the 6-foot-9 forward has indicated he would like to stay. Still, league observers expect multiple teams to pursue him when free agency opens this summer.
ESPN writer Zach Kram recently placed Wade on a shortlist of six underrated free agents worth targeting, citing the 27-year-old’s defensive flexibility, ability to guard several positions and impact that extends beyond traditional statistics.
Offense is not Wade’s primary selling point—he has never averaged more than 6.0 points per game and rarely features prominently in the Cavaliers’ scoring schemes. His value rests in defense. During Cleveland’s recent playoff run, Wade spent most of his time guarding Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram and Jalen Brunson. According to Kram, each of those players was limited to 25 points per 100 possessions or fewer when matched up with Wade.
Cleveland alternated Wade between the starting lineup and the bench throughout the postseason, largely because of his modest offensive role. Kram argued that Wade’s ideal role could be as a key reserve on a contending roster—a description that still fits the Cavaliers should they succeed in re-signing him.
Statistical indicators reinforce Wade’s value. He has posted a positive on/off differential in all but one NBA season, suggesting his influence often surpasses what shows up in box scores.
Whether Wade remains in Cleveland or lands elsewhere, his defensive versatility is expected to make him one of the more sought-after under-the-radar options when free agency begins.
