The Los Angeles Clippers have obtained forward Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round draft pick from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for $1 million in cash, the teams announced Monday.
The move became official at 6:19 p.m. PT, several hours after ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the agreement.
Why Philadelphia made the deal
Philadelphia needed to clear a roster spot and additional salary room to remain below the first-apron hard cap before finalizing a veteran-minimum contract with guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The club had already waived Dalen Terry’s non-guaranteed deal to sign LeBron James last week. Instead of cutting forward Jabari Walker, whose contract carries only a $250,000 partial guarantee, the front office chose to offload Broome and attach a draft pick to complete the maneuver.

Los Angeles will receive the second-most favorable of three 2027 second-round selections controlled by Philadelphia:
- Philadelphia’s own 2027 second-round pick
- The more favorable of Golden State’s or Phoenix’s 2027 second-round pick
- The most favorable of Oklahoma City’s, Houston’s, Indiana’s or Miami’s 2027 second-round pick
Contract mechanics
Broome, 24, is earning the second-year minimum salary of $2,150,917. Because he is on a four-year deal, Los Angeles could not use the minimum-salary exception to absorb the contract; instead, the Clippers utilized the $2.3 million trade exception created when they sent Chris Paul to Toronto at February’s deadline.
Broome’s rookie season
The 35th overall pick in the 2025 draft saw action in 11 NBA games last season, totaling 10 points and 16 rebounds across 55 minutes. He spent most of the campaign with the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats, where he averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 blocks over 26 contests. His year was interrupted by a late-February partial meniscectomy on his right knee, though he returned for limited playoff minutes in Philadelphia’s second-round series against New York.
Cap implications for both clubs
For the Clippers, Broome’s contract fits comfortably under the luxury-tax threshold and carries non-guaranteed salaries of $2.53 million in 2027-28 and a $2.74 million team option for 2028-29. It remains unclear whether Los Angeles views the 6-foot-10 forward as part of its long-term plans or primarily valued the incoming draft asset.
After the trade and Caldwell-Pope’s expected signing, Philadelphia will sit roughly $1.8 million below the first apron with 14 standard contracts. The 76ers are likely to leave their 15th roster spot open until later in the regular season; the earliest they could add another player without surpassing the apron is December 4, though a signing closer to January or February is considered more probable. The transaction also creates a $2,150,917 trade exception for Philadelphia.
