Two games into their first-round series against the Toronto Raptors, the Cleveland Cavaliers are relying on near-constant communication between guards Donovan Mitchell and James Harden to close an experience gap that comes with their new partnership.
Mitchell and Harden have totaled 112 points through the opening pair of contests and have spent long stretches during timeouts talking through adjustments.
“A lot of times in timeouts we’ll spend two-thirds of the break communicating amongst each other,” Mitchell said. “Just trying to make these adjustments and pick apart what we see.”
The dialogue has shown up defensively as well. Harden, who collected five steals in Game 2, has been the most vocal player on the floor, directing coverages and organizing the group.
“I know we are behind,” Harden noted. “Communication during games and on practice days is very important because that can get us over the hump.”
Head coach Kenny Atkinson said the pair has taken charge of huddles. “They’re in constant conversations about what’s going on out there,” Atkinson explained. “In the huddle, they are de facto leaders.”
Strus Produces After Foot Surgery
Max Strus, back in the rotation after surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his right foot, has delivered immediate offense off the bench. The swingman scored 24 points in Game 1 and logged heavy minutes again in Game 2, filling a critical scoring role while continuing to play through lingering soreness.
Wade Anchors Perimeter Defense
Dean Wade has started both playoff games at small forward and has been tasked with defending Brandon Ingram. The strategy has paid off: Ingram finished Game 2 with just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting. Wade scored only three points himself but drew praise from teammates for his all-around impact.
“He deserves a bunch of credit,” Mitchell said, making sure to mention Wade before ending his postgame availability. “His impact is extremely high outside of just the scoring.”
Wade will enter free agency this summer, and his postseason defensive work is expected to strengthen his market.
