Cleveland Stars Signal Desire to Stay After Sweep

The Cleveland Cavaliers exited the postseason with a four-game sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals, yet both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden indicated they intend to remain with the franchise.
Mitchell: “I Love It Here”
Following Monday’s Game 4 loss in Cleveland, Mitchell told reporters he is committed to the organization. “I love it here,” the All-Star guard said, adding that he “still believes” the current roster can contend. Mitchell, who reaches extension eligibility this summer, apologized to local fans for the abrupt finish. “This city deserves a ring,” he said. The series marked Mitchell’s first appearance in a conference finals.
Harden Expects to Return
Harden, who averaged 16.0 points on 38.9 percent shooting and 17.9 percent from three during the series, echoed Mitchell’s stance. “Definitely want to be here,” the veteran guard said. Harden holds a $42.3 million player option for 2024-25 but is widely expected to decline it in search of a longer pact. Cleveland already carried the NBA’s highest payroll this season and operated above the second tax apron, factors that could complicate negotiations.
Mitchell publicly endorsed a new deal for Harden, saying the 10-time All-Star “helped this group get somewhere we have never been.”
Atkinson Backed by Players, Front Office
Head coach Kenny Atkinson faced criticism after noting that analytics had projected two expected wins earlier in the series, a comment made before the Cavaliers lost all four games by an average of 19.2 points. Despite outside questions, Atkinson retains strong internal support. Owner Dan Gilbert originally favored his hiring, and both Mitchell and Harden defended him after Game 4. “I ride with Kenny,” Mitchell said.
League sources also indicated that president of basketball operations Koby Altman is expected to stay in his role.
Gilbert Promises Busy Offseason
Shortly after Monday’s defeat, Gilbert wrote on social media that the club “took a step ahead this spring” but is “nowhere near” its ultimate goal. “We will dig in all summer and do everything we possibly can to take the next step,” he said.
