The Cleveland Cavaliers are banking on rookie guard Tyrese Proctor to make significant strides in the coming months, president of basketball operations Koby Altman said during his end-of-season press conference.

“Tyrese Proctor’s going to have a big offseason for us, hopefully,” Altman told reporters, adding that he is “excited” about the 20-year-old’s growth.

Proctor’s role varied throughout his first NBA campaign, but early-season injuries opened minutes for the former Duke standout. Altman noted that the guard logged more than 500 minutes and even appeared in the season opener at Madison Square Garden when Cleveland needed backcourt depth.

The Australian native flashed potential in several areas. In his most productive outing, he registered 22 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Altman praised Proctor’s development as a playmaker, shooter and defender.

Proctor acknowledged in April that the uncertainty of his playing time was a challenge. “Not knowing when you’re going to play, how many minutes you’re going to play, so just being ready at all times is really important,” he said via Spencer Davies of Roundtable.

Altman credited head coach Kenny Atkinson and the Cavaliers’ player-development staff for fostering growth among young contributors. Recent success stories include Jaylon Tyson, Craig Porter Jr., Dean Wade and Sam Merrill.

With Cleveland intent on remaining in championship contention next season, Altman indicated that internal improvement from players such as Proctor could be as valuable as any offseason transaction.
