The Cleveland Cavaliers spent six seasons trying to prove they could win without LeBron James. With the four-time NBA champion expected to reach free agency for the first time since 2018, the organization may soon decide whether to bring the hometown icon back for a third stint.
Team insiders told ESPN that James’s exit to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018 left the franchise “rooted in the culture of LeBron” and unprepared for the future. Cleveland missed the playoffs the next four years, stumbling through an uneven rebuild.
The front office gradually reshaped the roster, acquiring center Jarrett Allen from Brooklyn, drafting forward Evan Mobley and landing All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell in a blockbuster trade. Since Mitchell’s arrival, the Cavaliers have reached the postseason every year; they managed only one play-in appearance during the four seasons before he came aboard.
This season, Cleveland doubled down on contention by sending Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden, a move that pushed the club’s luxury-tax bill to roughly $69 million—the first time owner Dan Gilbert has paid the tax since James departed.
According to ESPN, the Cavaliers intended that roster construction to deliver sustainable success without counting on James’s return. Nevertheless, league sources continue to link the 41-year-old forward to Cleveland, noting the on-paper fit alongside Harden, Mitchell, Mobley and Allen.
Speculation has intensified with the Cavaliers trailing the New York Knicks 0-2 in the Eastern Conference finals. If Cleveland falls short, front-office pressure to explore a reunion could grow.
James remains one of the league’s most impactful players, and his looming decision—stay in Los Angeles, come home again or retire—stands to dominate the offseason conversation.
