The Cleveland Cavaliers will step to the podium late in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft holding the No. 29 overall selection, a choice that carries added weight for a franchise short on future picks.

Several first-rounders remain committed to prior trades, most notably the 2022 package that brought Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland. The organization currently has no first-round pick in 2027 and faces multiple swap clauses and protections in subsequent drafts, leaving limited flexibility to replenish the roster through the draft after this year.

President of basketball operations Koby Altman has a track record of finding talent outside the top of the draft. His selections include two-time All-Star guard Darius Garland and 2025 Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley. Even 2022 first-rounder Ochai Agbaji, who was later traded, helped Cleveland secure additional pieces.

Prospects on the radar

Koa Pete, Arizona
The 6-foot-8 forward posted 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while knocking down 35 percent of his three-point attempts. His combination of size, floor spacing and readiness could mesh with a veteran roster intent on contending immediately.

Dailyn Swain, Texas
Swain averaged 17.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, showing an ability to attack the rim and defend multiple positions. If the 6-foot-7 wing is still available at No. 29, Cleveland may have difficulty passing on his two-way upside.

Meleek Thomas, Arkansas
Thomas delivered 15.6 points per outing and converted better than 41 percent from beyond the arc. With veteran guard James Harden approaching the twilight of his career, adding another long-range backcourt scorer could help balance the Cavaliers’ present and future timelines.

Cleveland remains in win-now mode, but with few upcoming draft assets, capitalizing on this year’s late first-round pick may prove critical to sustaining the club’s competitive window.
