The Cleveland Cavaliers discovered their postseason opponent moments after Sunday’s regular-season finale at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. As players and coaches gathered in the locker room, a Boston Celtics victory over the Orlando Magic finalized the Eastern Conference bracket, confirming a first-round series against the Toronto Raptors that opens Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson said the club has no illusions about the challenge. “We know that’s no picnic,” Atkinson noted. “They low-key dominated us for the games we played them this year. A lot of respect. Toronto’s a great challenge for us.”

Regular-season results favor Toronto

The Raptors swept all three meetings with Cleveland before Thanksgiving, outscoring the Cavaliers by a combined 35 points. Atkinson, however, emphasized that the current roster looks different from the group that dropped those contests. “We’re a better team than we were pre-trade deadline,” he said. “The front office did an amazing job adding the pieces we added.”

The most prominent addition is James Harden, whose presence, according to Atkinson, has boosted confidence and maturity. “Maturity and poise win in the playoffs,” the coach added. “I think we’re a higher IQ team.”

Players focused on preparation

Second-year forward Jaylon Tyson echoed his coach’s respect for Toronto’s length and defensive pressure. “It’s another opportunity. Got a week to prepare for them,” Tyson said. He pointed to last season’s playoff appearance as useful experience, noting the club now understands the heightened pace and physicality.

Reserve forward NaeQwan Tomlin kept the message simple: “We were ready for whoever. They have good size and guys that defend. We’ve just got to play our game.”

Strong finish fuels optimism

Cleveland closed the schedule on a 22-9 run, winning five of its final six games. The Cavaliers hope that momentum, combined with roster upgrades, will translate into improved postseason results—though no one inside the locker room expects an easy path past a Raptors squad known for speed and turnovers forced.

The best-of-seven series begins Saturday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
