The Portland Trail Blazers made an early inquiry to veteran coach Tom Thibodeau about their vacant head-coaching position, league sources told Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Thibodeau, however, did not pursue the conversation, and neither did Michael Malone, who was also contacted before accepting the top job at North Carolina.
With those attempts stalled, Portland has expanded its list of candidates. Denver Nuggets assistant Jared Dudley and Houston Rockets assistant Ben Sullivan have already completed interviews, according to the report.
Dudley, a 14-year NBA player, began coaching as an assistant in Dallas before joining Michael Malone’s staff in Denver last offseason. Sullivan, known for his offensive acumen, worked under Mike Budenholzer and Ime Udoka and played collegiately at the University of Portland, giving him local ties.
The front office continues to cast a wide net. Brooklyn Nets assistant Steve Hetzel, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Greg St. Jean and several additional assistants are also linked to the opening. Interim coach Tiago Splitter guided the club to the postseason but is not considered the favorite to remain in charge.
New owner Tom Dundon is said to be conducting an extensive process, gathering information from a broad field before choosing the franchise’s next head coach.
