The Portland Trail Blazers have widened their head-coaching search to a group that could approach 20 candidates, according to league sources cited by The Athletic.

Team officials have not set a timetable for making a hire, and no frontrunner has emerged, sources told reporter Sam Amick. The process has now stretched deep into the offseason with no firm end date.

Interim coach Tiago Splitter remains under consideration after guiding Portland through a challenging season and earning strong backing inside the locker room.

Financial considerations in focus

Several executives around the league believe the Blazers may pursue a lower-cost option, potentially near the bottom of the NBA’s coaching salary scale. Owner Tom Dundon has rejected suggestions that the organization is looking to cut corners, but one league source noted that the terms of the eventual agreement will ultimately reveal the team’s spending intentions.

The broad candidate pool, lack of a clear direction and ongoing financial questions underscore the uncertainty surrounding Portland’s next coaching decision.
