Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis has informed team president Michael Winger that he is highly interested in remaining with the franchise on a long-term basis, according to a report from Dallas Hoops Journal cited by Hoops Wire.
Davis, 31, arrived in Washington at the February trade deadline in a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. A torn ligament in his left hand kept the eight-time All-Star from appearing in any games for the Wizards this season, but he remains under contract for $58.5 million in 2024-25 and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28.
The news comes as the Wizards work to secure another key piece of their roster. Guard Trae Young, acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in January, is widely expected to re-sign after declining his player option. Young’s arrival reunited him with senior vice president of player personnel Travis Schlenk, who helped assemble the Hawks squad that reached the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals.
Washington’s front office is attempting to build around a younger core that already features prospects Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson and Kyshawn George. The club also owns the No. 1 overall pick in next week’s draft and is projected to select AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson or Cameron Boozer.
After finishing with the NBA’s worst record last season, the Wizards are positioning themselves for a reboot that could include two established stars. If both Davis and Young commit long term, Washington would enter the 2024-25 campaign with a significantly strengthened foundation.
