NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged on Thursday that the league’s 2026-27 schedule remains unfinished while executives, broadcasters and fans wait for LeBron James to announce where he will play next season.
Speaking at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit, Silver joked that James’s choice will shape marquee dates such as opening night and Christmas Day.
“Where LeBron plays will affect the schedule,” he said. “I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule, because the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule.”
Silver added that he has “no inside information” about the four-time MVP’s plans.
James, who turns 42 this fall, sidestepped the topic earlier in the day during a live taping of his “Mind The Game” podcast at Fanatics Fest. Host and Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton asked about his future, but James declined to answer.
While Silver admitted he prefers certain potential outcomes, he emphasized that James has earned the right to decide what is best for him and his family. “It’s amazing what he’s done for the sport and the league,” the commissioner said. “He deserves the opportunities in front of him to make his own decision.”
Until that decision comes, NBA officials, television partners and teams remain in limbo, waiting to finalize next season’s calendar.
