New York Knicks icon Walt “Clyde” Frazier believes James Harden’s career résumé will be judged by what happens next, saying the star guard’s “legacy is on the line” as the Knicks actively pursue him.

Frazier’s comment came on May 21, 2026, amid reports that New York is targeting Harden in an offseason push to add elite scoring and playmaking to its roster. Speaking about the potential move, the Hall of Famer noted that Harden, a former NBA MVP still chasing a first championship ring, faces heightened pressure should he land at Madison Square Garden.

“When you come to New York, everything is amplified,” Frazier said. “If Harden joins the Knicks and doesn’t win, that will follow him.”

The Knicks, who reached the playoffs in consecutive seasons but failed to advance past the second round, are expected to make a significant offer for the 10-time All-Star, according to league sources. Harden, 36, can become a free agent this summer by declining his player option.

Frazier’s remarks add to the growing scrutiny surrounding Harden, whose postseason performances have drawn criticism despite his regular-season accolades. The guard ranks among the NBA’s all-time leaders in three-pointers and assists but has yet to secure a championship in 17 seasons.
