SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr will remain on the Golden State Warriors’ bench after signing a new two-year contract that runs through the 2027-28 NBA season, the team confirmed Friday. The deal keeps the 60-year-old as the league’s highest-paid coach; sources said he earned $17.5 million last season.

Why Kerr chose to continue

Kerr weighed stepping away during a three-week break but decided he still wants to coach after meetings with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy. Discussions covered potential roster moves, staffing adjustments and the organization’s competitive direction. With starting wings Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody rehabbing serious knee injuries, both sides agreed short-term improvements are still possible without initiating a full rebuild.

Implications for Stephen Curry

Curry, who publicly supported Kerr’s return but did not demand it, retains the coach he prefers as he approaches the final stages of his career. The 38-year-old guard becomes eligible in August to add one or two seasons to the single year left on his current contract. Kerr’s presence is expected to smooth those extension talks.

What it means for Draymond Green

Green holds a $27.6 million player option for next season. While the Warriors may use that salary in potential trades, team officials have indicated they are not looking to move him. They value his defensive impact and leadership, and Kerr’s extension signals an ongoing commitment to fielding a competitive roster.

Key offseason dates

The Warriors hold the 11th position in Sunday’s NBA draft lottery, giving them a 9.4% chance to move into the top four. Management could either select a high-ceiling prospect or shop the pick in pursuit of a star. Staying at No. 11, which has 77.6% odds, would still provide a vital asset as the franchise balances immediate needs with long-term planning.

The agreement extends Kerr’s tenure to at least 13 seasons, during which he has led Golden State to four championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022). After a 37-45 campaign that ended in a play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns, the Warriors will attempt to retool around their veteran core while Kerr continues to oversee the transition.
