Timberwolves Take 56-48 Edge Late in Second Quarter of Game 4

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Timberwolves carried a 56-48 advantage over the San Antonio Spurs with 2:11 left in the second quarter of Sunday night’s Western Conference semifinal Game 4.
San Antonio entered the contest up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series but trailed early despite shooting 49 percent from the field (18-for-37). Minnesota connected on 45 percent of its attempts (20-for-44) yet benefited from a 10-for-12 showing at the foul line and a 6-for-16 mark from beyond the arc.
Key performers
- Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards scored a game-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 5-of-6 free throws.
- Rookie guard Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 12 points and four rebounds, also hitting a 26-foot three-pointer that cut the gap to 52-48 with 3:07 remaining in the half.
- Minnesota center Rudy Gobert pulled down five boards, while Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox had 11 points and three assists.
The Timberwolves owned a slight 21-20 edge on the glass and committed six turnovers to the Spurs’ eight. San Antonio was just 8-for-12 at the stripe and 4-for-13 from long range.
Both teams were without one rotation player: Spurs forward David Jones Garcia (ankle) and Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles) remained sidelined.
Game 4 is being played at Target Center and aired nationally on NBC and Peacock. Game 5 shifts to San Antonio later this week.
