San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been cleared from the NBA’s concussion protocol and will suit up for Game 4 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, the team announced.
Wembanyama sustained the concussion during Game 2 on Tuesday and was held out of Game 3, a contest San Antonio won to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series. The 20-year-old traveled with the club to Portland on Thursday while completing the league’s required recovery steps.
Under the protocol, players must match or exceed preseason baseline neurological tests and progress through gradual physical activity. According to the Spurs, Wembanyama passed neurological evaluations, completed cardio work 24 hours after the injury, and advanced through increased workloads on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before receiving final clearance on Sunday.
The 7-foot-4 rookie averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and an NBA-best 3.1 blocks during the regular season. Earlier this month, he became the league’s first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year and is one of three finalists for the MVP award.
Game 4 tips off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
