Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra sharply criticized Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball after a sequence he called a “dangerous play” left Heat center Bam Adebayo injured.
Spoelstra’s comments came in the immediate aftermath of the game, during his post-game press conference. The veteran coach said Ball’s actions put Adebayo at unnecessary risk and suggested the NBA should take a close look at the incident.
“It was a dangerous play,” Spoelstra said, adding that he expected the league office to examine the contact for possible disciplinary measures. Adebayo left the floor following the collision; the Heat did not provide an immediate update on the severity of his injury.
League sources indicated that the NBA’s standard review process for flagrant or reckless contact was already underway. No timetable was given for a ruling, but penalties can range from fines to suspensions, depending on the findings.
The Hornets did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Ball had not addressed the media at the time of publication.
