NEW YORK — Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse rejoined the team Wednesday, less than 24 hours after attending the funeral of his brother, Steve Nurse, in Ankeny, Iowa.
Nurse, speaking before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, said his brother was “a huge fan” who would expect him to be on the sideline.
“I’m here coaching and my brother would expect me to be,” Nurse told reporters. “He wants us to go play, he wants us to play hard, so that’s what we’re going to try to do tonight.”
Steve Nurse died unexpectedly last Wednesday at age 62. Despite the loss, Nick Nurse remained with the 76ers as they erased a 3-1 deficit to eliminate the Boston Celtics in the first round. Philadelphia then fell to the Knicks 137-98 in Monday’s series opener.
Nurse thanked Knicks head coach Mike Brown for offering condolences during Brown’s Tuesday news conference and expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support his family has received.
Game 2 tipped off Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
