Eastern Conference set for three decisive Game 7s as first round nears finish

The opening round of the 2026 NBA playoffs reaches a rare climax this weekend with three Game 7s—all in the Eastern Conference. It marks only the second time since the league adopted a best-of-seven format for every round in 2003 that the first round features at least three deciding games; the 2014 postseason produced five.

New York, the East’s No. 3 seed, already advanced and will meet the winner of Boston-Philadelphia. The other side of the bracket remains open until Detroit-Orlando and Cleveland-Toronto settle their series on Sunday.

(2) Boston Celtics vs. (7) Philadelphia 76ers

When / Where: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, TD Garden (NBC/Peacock)
ESPN Analytics: Boston 74.5 %

The 76ers have forced a seventh game by leaning on a straightforward formula: Joel Embiid attacking single coverage or kicking out of double-teams, Tyrese Maxey exploiting Boston’s backcourt, and Paul George finally producing at a max-contract level. Philadelphia shot just 11-for-33 from deep while winning Game 6; cleaner looks early would bolster its upset bid and end a playoff drought against Boston that stretches to 1982.

For the Celtics, long-range accuracy remains the barometer. Under head coach Joe Mazzulla, the club is 17-1 in postseason games when it converts at least 40 % of its three-pointers and 19-19 when it does not. Boston must also limit second-chance points, but perimeter shooting drives its offense.

The individual to watch is center Neemias Queta. The third-year big man delivered a team-best plus-13.2 regular-season net rating yet has totaled 24 fouls against only 18 made shots in six games against Embiid. Staying out of foul trouble and supplying rebounds and screens are critical if Boston wants to avoid relying on defensively stretched backups Nikola Vucevic or Luka Garza.

(1) Detroit Pistons vs. (8) Orlando Magic

When / Where: Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET, Little Caesars Arena (ABC)
ESPN Analytics: Detroit 78.9 %

Orlando’s road map mirrors its Game 1 victory: overwhelm Detroit with early defensive pressure and interior muscle. Jalen Suggs set the tone in that opener, Wendell Carter Jr. outplayed Jalen Duren inside, and Paolo Banchero balanced scoring and playmaking. The Magic will attempt to replicate that without Franz Wagner; the forward (right calf strain) is not expected to dress, so reserves Tristan da Silva, Anthony Black and Jamal Cain must fill the gap.

The Pistons advance if they dictate physicality in the paint. Cade Cunningham is the series’ top talent, but Detroit needs Duren to control the interior and re-establish the aggressive defense that erased a 24-point second-half deficit in Game 6.

Detroit’s perimeter shooting is the X-factor. The Pistons ranked 28th in regular-season three-point makes (11.0 per game) and 17th in accuracy (35.6 %). Those numbers have collapsed to 8.7 makes and 29.7 % in the postseason, worst among playoff teams. A regression to the mean at home could spare Detroit another frantic comeback.

(4) Cleveland Cavaliers vs. (5) Toronto Raptors

When / Where: Sunday, 7:30 p.m. ET, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (NBC/Peacock)
ESPN Analytics: Cleveland 60.1 %

Toronto’s path is defense. The Raptors have narrowed the talent gap by outworking Cleveland—creating turnovers, diving for loose balls and intensifying their half-court pressure. With all expectations on the hosts, Toronto will try to turn Game 7 into a grind.

Cleveland’s priority is limiting fast-break points. When the Cavaliers protect the ball, Toronto struggles to score in the half court. Donovan Mitchell and James Harden must also lift the offense, but their defensive focus on transition can tilt the contest.

Harden is Sunday night’s wild card. The veteran guard has averaged 19.3 points on 35 % shooting over seven career Game 7s, including 22 % from three-point range. In this series he has topped 20 points in every Cleveland win and fallen below that line in each loss. A reliable outing against Toronto’s pressure could decide the matchup.

The three winners will open second-round play next week, completing an eventful first round that has already delivered a sweep, multiple upsets and historic rallies—and now, three decisive finales.
