PALM DESERT, Calif. — Luka Doncic will sit out the Los Angeles Lakers’ opening two preseason contests this weekend, the club announced Friday.

The Lakers begin their six-game exhibition schedule Friday night against the Phoenix Suns at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, followed by a road matchup with the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

Team officials said the 26-year-old guard and the Lakers’ performance staff decided the short hiatus was prudent after Doncic’s summer run at EuroBasket, prioritizing his long-term readiness for the regular season.

Los Angeles will also be without several other players Friday. LeBron James is sidelined by nerve irritation in his glute, Marcus Smart is dealing with left Achilles tendinopathy, Maxi Kleber is out with a quad issue, and rookie Adou Thiero is nursing swelling in his left knee.
