The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, May 15, formally recognized former Lakers forward Metta World Peace by designating the date as “Metta World Peace Day.”
Council members approved the honor to acknowledge the ex-player’s public advocacy efforts. World Peace, born Ron Artest, has been widely cited for using his NBA platform to promote community initiatives and social causes.
The proclamation was presented during the council’s regular session at City Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Members praised World Peace for engaging with local youth programs and for encouraging civic participation.
Metta World Peace played for the Lakers from 2009 to 2013 and again in the 2015-16 season, helping the franchise win the 2010 NBA championship.
