Grizzlies suspend Ja Morant for one game amid growing tension in Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies benched star guard Ja Morant for one game over the weekend, citing “conduct detrimental to the team” after a heated post-game exchange with head coach Tuomas Iisalo following Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

What triggered the suspension?

According to team sources, Iisalo openly questioned Morant’s effort and leadership in the locker room. Morant’s reply, described by club officials as dismissive, prompted the front office to impose the ban. The guard then delivered a terse 55-second media session in which he repeatedly said reporters should “ask the coaching staff” about his poor outing.

Immediate on-court impact

Morant, 26, missed Sunday’s defeat to the Toronto Raptors, returned Monday against the Detroit Pistons with 18 points and 10 assists, yet Memphis fell again and slipped to 3-5. A third consecutive loss Wednesday to the Houston Rockets dropped the club to 3-6.

A season of frustration

The two-time All-Star is averaging a career-low 29.4 minutes while shooting 39.3% overall and just 13.9% from three (5-for-36). After Monday’s setback he admitted the game is no longer “fun,” underscoring widening cracks between player and franchise.

Strained relationship with the organization

Morant’s rapport with management has cooled since the summer, when Memphis extended forward Jaren Jackson Jr. but did not discuss additional years with Morant, now in Year 3 of a five-year, $197.2 million deal signed in July 2022. Turnover on the coaching staff and in the front office has left the guard without a trusted confidant, sources said.

Club keeps details in-house

General manager Zach Kleiman has declined public comment beyond the single-sentence suspension notice. Iisalo, asked pre-game Monday whether the matter was settled, replied, “Internal issue. We’re moving forward.”

Statistical downturn

With Memphis abandoning last season’s egalitarian offense, Morant now ranks second league-wide in dribbles per 100 possessions and is averaging a career-high 54 pick-and-rolls, yet his player efficiency rating has fallen to 16.5, his lowest mark since entering the NBA. The Grizzlies sit 26th in offensive rating and 25th on defense, hampered by injuries to guards Scotty Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome and centers Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke. Rookie wing Cedric Coward has been a bright spot at 15.3 points on 58% shooting.

Trade chatter and contract math

Morant’s salary is $39.5 million this season, followed by $42.2 million and $44.9 million through 2027. While point-guard demand around the league is limited, executives note that Houston — dealing with Fred VanVleet’s season-ending knee injury — could assemble a package, though apron restraints make matching money difficult. Front-office insiders liken any prospective return to the 2023 Kyrie Irving deal, but emphasize Morant is younger and under contract longer.

What’s next

The Grizzlies host Dallas and Oklahoma City before embarking on a four-game Eastern road swing against New York, Boston, Cleveland and San Antonio. Jackson voiced confidence the club has “all the tools” to rebound, stressing that complete buy-in is essential.
