The Memphis Grizzlies announced Monday that guard Ty Jerome sustained a high-grade strain in his right calf and is expected to miss a minimum of four weeks before medical staff reviews his progress.
Jerome suffered the injury during the opening quarter of last week’s preseason matchup against the Miami Heat. The 28-year-old joined Memphis in free agency this summer on a three-year, $28 million contract after a breakout season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Grizzlies will begin their regular season Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans with several key players already on the injury list:
- Backup point guard Scottie Pippen Jr. is sidelined at least 12 weeks because of a left big-toe injury.
- Second-year center Zach Edey remains out with an ankle issue.
- Forward Brandon Clarke underwent a knee procedure late last month and is due for evaluation six weeks post-surgery.
- All-Star guard Ja Morant has dealt with an ankle problem but is expected to be available for Wednesday’s opener.
Memphis will revisit Jerome’s status in four weeks as the club navigates the early part of the schedule without several rotation players.
