Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown denounced an apparent non-call in the closing seconds of Monday night’s 105-103 defeat to the Utah Jazz at TD Garden, saying the officiating error “cost us the game.”
With Boston holding a 102-101 advantage and 50 seconds remaining, Brown dribbled at the top of the key when Jazz rookie Keyonte George slipped while defending. Brown then tripped over the fallen guard, lost possession, and Utah’s Walter Clayton Jr. ignited a fast break, lobbing to Lauri Markkanen for a go-ahead alley-oop that put the Jazz up 103-102 with 44 seconds left.
“You can’t have a mistake like that as an official at that point in the game,” Brown said postgame. “The whole staff blows the call—unacceptable.”
Crew chief Kevin Scott defended the decision in a pool report, explaining that officials saw George fall first, with Brown slipping on the same spot, “resulting in the ball becoming loose prior to any contact.”
Boston tied the score on the next possession when Neemias Queta hit one of two free throws, but Utah’s Jusuf Nurkic answered with a turnaround hook shot with one second left, sealing the road win.
Brown finished with 36 points in 37 minutes as the Celtics dropped to 3-5 on the season.
