Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens acknowledged on July 6, 2026, that the franchise’s surprise decision to trade All-Star wing Jaylen Brown was driven primarily by salary-cap concerns.

“The financial landscape left us with limited options,” Stevens told reporters, explaining that the team needed greater flexibility under the NBA’s cap rules. He added that the move was “extremely difficult” given Brown’s importance to the organization.

The Celtics confirmed the trade earlier in the day but did not immediately release full details of the deal or Brown’s destination. Stevens said the organization appreciates Brown’s contributions and wished him success with his new team.

The transaction will become official once league offices complete standard approval procedures.
