MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota will try to close out its first-round series against Denver on Thursday night without another key contributor after guard Ayo Dosunmu was ruled out of Game 6 because of a lingering right calf injury.

The Timberwolves enter the contest holding a 3-2 lead, but their roster has thinned dramatically. They already lost both starting guards in Game 4 when Anthony Edwards sustained a hyperextended left knee and Donte DiVincenzo tore his right Achilles. Dosunmu had filled the scoring void with 25, 43 and 18 points over the past three games, yet his calf issue worsened this week, forcing him to the sideline.

Reserve forward Kyle Anderson will also miss the game due to illness.

Denver remains short-handed as well. Starting forward Aaron Gordon, listed as questionable with the left calf strain that kept him out of Games 3 and 5, went through warm-ups but was scratched about an hour before the 9:30 p.m. ET tip-off. Prior to the decision, head coach Michael Malone said the team needed to balance urgency with long-term health. “You can’t think about tomorrow because tomorrow could be nothing,” assistant coach David Adelman added before Gordon was ruled out. “He could go out there and play and then be done for the playoffs. It’s really tough.”

Rookie wing Peyton Watson remains unavailable for Denver because of a hamstring strain.

Game 6 is scheduled to tip at Target Center as Minnesota looks to advance while the defending champions aim to force a deciding Game 7.
