The Philadelphia 76ers changed Joel Embiid’s injury designation to doubtful on Thursday evening, keeping open the possibility that the All-Star center could return for Game 3 of the first-round series against the Boston Celtics on Friday at Wells Fargo Center.
Embiid has not played since undergoing an emergency appendectomy in Houston two weeks ago. He was on the bench during last week’s play-in victory over the Orlando Magic but remained in Philadelphia while the 76ers split the first two games in Boston, dropping Game 1 on Sunday and rallying to win Game 2 on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds across 38 regular-season games. According to the team, he began a strength and conditioning program on Monday and took part in portions of practice on Thursday.
“We’re obviously really hopeful, and I think he’s really hopeful,” head coach Nick Nurse told reporters after practice. “He wants to play, and we want him to play. I don’t know how close we are to that at this point, but I think there’s some progress being made.”
Game 3 tips off Friday night with the series tied 1-1.
