The Cleveland Cavaliers will close their preseason schedule Tuesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse when they host the Detroit Pistons. While Cleveland is 0-3 in exhibition play—and 2-13 over the past several preseasons—head coach Kenny Atkinson has emphasized evaluation over results.

Atkinson sat his regular starters during Sunday’s lopsided loss in Boston, giving extended run to reserves and players on the roster bubble. Those minutes could prove crucial once the regular season opens next week.

Rotation spots still up for grabs

Third-year guard Craig Porter Jr. continues to vie for time behind Darius Garland and, eventually, Lonzo Ball. Porter hit five three-pointers in the preseason opener against Chicago, keeping him in the conversation for back-court minutes.

Rookies Tyrese Proctor and Jaylon Tyson are also pushing for roles. Proctor has drawn praise for his poise and off-the-dribble creativity, while Tyson’s offensive output has been modest despite the organization’s belief in his two-way upside.

Bench production highlights

Veteran center Thomas Bryant supplied 11 points in 17 minutes against the Celtics, offering the energetic presence the Cavs expect from him off the bench. Guard Killian Hayes contributed 10 points and two steals in that contest as he attempts to solidify a place in the guard rotation.

Cleveland’s objective Tuesday is less about the scoreboard and more about sharpening its rotation and rhythm before regular-season games begin to count.
