The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for the 2025-26 campaign with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves positioned as long-term cornerstones, yet both players still hope to share the court with LeBron James beyond this season, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Doncic, under contract for at least three more years, and Reaves, who will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, have privately expressed a desire to continue their partnership with the four-time NBA champion, sources told ESPN. Neither player has asked James about his retirement plans, opting instead to respect the veteran’s decision-making process.

James, 40, is set to enter his 23rd NBA season but faces uncertainty on multiple fronts. He will be an unrestricted free agent in July and is currently recovering from sciatica, an injury that will sideline him on Opening Night for the first time in his career.

The Lakers’ front office and roster have signaled they will allow James to dictate the timing of any future decisions. Team focus remains on his rehabilitation, with hopes that a mid-season return and a potential championship run could persuade him to remain in Los Angeles for at least one more year.

Contract Outlook

  • Luka Doncic: Signed through at least the 2027-28 season.
  • Austin Reaves: Eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2026, though indications suggest the Lakers will pursue a long-term agreement.
  • LeBron James: Unrestricted free agent next summer.

Despite his age, James continues to earn league-wide respect. He received votes in several categories in the NBA’s annual general manager survey after making the All-NBA Second Team last season at 40 years old.

For now, Doncic and Reaves intend to give James space while hoping their on-court partnership extends beyond the upcoming season.
