Los Angeles — LeBron James will not be on the floor when the Los Angeles Lakers open the 2025-26 campaign, the club confirmed earlier this week, citing left-side sciatica that doctors describe as nerve irritation in his glute.

ESPN insider Shams Charania told NBA Today that the problem first surfaced during a late-court workout in late July or early August and has bothered the four-time MVP ever since. “It’s now two and a half months and counting that he’s had to deal with it and manage it,” Charania said.

Unusual Summer for the 40-Year-Old Star

According to Charania, James completed very little on-court work for more than a month leading up to the Lakers’ Sept. 29 media day, interrupting the regimented offseason routine he credits for his longevity.

The team estimates a three- to four-week recovery timeline. Even on the fastest track, the 40-year-old would not return before Oct. 31, when Los Angeles plays its first NBA Cup game. A more likely target is early or mid-November, provided there are no setbacks.

First Opening-Night Absence in 22 Seasons

James’ absence from the Oct. 21 opener against Golden State marks the first time in his 22-year career that he will miss opening night. Last season he appeared in 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists.

Head coach JJ Redick said the veteran forward has not taken part in any training-camp activities and sat out the Lakers’ first two preseason contests. Forward Jake LaRavia has started in James’ spot and is expected to remain there until the future Hall of Famer is cleared.

Team officials have emphasized that the focus is on full recovery rather than a hurried return.
