JJ Redick: Lakers Navigating Training Camp Without On-Court Work From LeBron James

Los Angeles — Lakers head coach JJ Redick said the team is “playing the cards we’re dealt” as LeBron James continues to sit out on-court activities during training camp while Luka Doncic and new center Deandre Ayton work to build chemistry.
Speaking after Thursday’s practice, Redick confirmed that Ayton and Doncic practiced together “a couple days” the previous week, but added that nobody on the roster has shared the floor with James so far.
“You gotta play the cards you’re dealt,” Redick told reporters. “DA got a couple days with Luka last week. No one’s gotten any time with LeBron… He hasn’t been on the court with the team.”
Doncic a Full Participant; James on Separate Timeline
Redick noted that Doncic took part in every session last week, dismissing speculation of any undisclosed injury following the guard’s EuroBasket commitments. James, meanwhile, remains on what Redick called “his own timeline” as the Lakers manage the 40-year-old’s workload ahead of the regular season.
Ayton Eager to Play With Elite Playmaker
Ayton, acquired in the offseason to bolster the frontcourt, said during Media Day that teaming with Doncic should simplify his role.
“I’ve proven I dominate best with playmakers and I’m here once again,” the 7-footer said. “Playing alongside Luka is going to make a lot of things easier.”
The Lakers will continue balancing rest for their stars with the need to establish on-court chemistry as camp progresses.
