The New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks held preliminary conversations this summer about a potential deal for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. Discussions ended quickly, and league sources told Bondy that the 30-year-old star would have to demand a move specifically to New York for any trade to become realistic.
Bondy reported in his subscriber mailbag that New York lacks the draft capital to compete with other suitors unless Jalen Brunson were included in a multi-team package—an option the Knicks are considered unlikely to pursue. Even if Milwaukee struggles during the season, there is currently no indication Antetokounmpo plans to press for a trade.
While the revelation that Antetokounmpo would favor Madison Square Garden over other destinations is viewed internally as encouraging, team officials are aware the storyline could become a distraction if the club starts slowly. Bondy also noted that the Knicks already spent a large portion of their future picks to acquire Mikal Bridges, leaving the front office with limited flexibility.
Frontcourt Learning Curve
Head coach Mike Brown told the New York Post’s Andrew Crane that big men Karl-Anthony Towns and Guerschon Yabusele are still adjusting to the dual responsibilities required in his offensive scheme. “They’re playing both positions in our offense, so their learning curve is steeper than anyone else’s,” Brown said.
Towns added that he has been impressed by center Mitchell Robinson during training camp. “He’s very gifted with his feet and surprised me with what he can do offensively,” Towns said, expressing confidence the pair can develop strong chemistry in the frontcourt.
Brown’s MSG Debut
Brown will coach his first game at Madison Square Garden as the team’s home boss on Thursday. “MSG is such an iconic venue,” he told the New York Daily News’ Kristian Winfield. “Whether it’s preseason or regular season, knowing that’s your home floor gives you goosebumps.”
Coaching Staff Addition
The Knicks have added Mark Tyndale as a player development assistant, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Tyndale previously held similar roles with Portland and Toronto.
