Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James expressed admiration for teammate Luka Doncic after the guard arrived at training camp noticeably slimmer and in what James called the best shape of his career.
During the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast, released this week, James said Doncic’s reshaped physique should pay dividends long after the final buzzer. “A lot of people will look at the on-court stuff, but the real difference is going to be recovery,” James explained. “When your body is in elite condition, you feel the benefits the next morning, especially after stretches of three games in four nights.”
James, who has built a reputation for meticulous year-round training, noted that he watched Doncic lead Slovenia to the EuroBasket semifinals against Germany over the summer. He observed that the 25-year-old looks “quicker” and “more functional” after shedding significant weight.
The four-time MVP added that Doncic’s statistical production is unlikely to change—“he’ll still post 30 or 40 points with double-digit rebounds and assists,” James said—but the guard’s improved stamina should help him maintain energy through the season’s grueling schedule. “I’m extremely proud of him,” James added. “He did this for himself, and that’s what matters.”
James joked that he might adopt elements of Doncic’s regimen as he enters his 22nd NBA season. The Lakers plan to manage both stars carefully during the preseason; Doncic is expected to see limited action, while James is likely to sit out the exhibition slate entirely.
