Los Angeles Lakers television analyst Stu Lantz is recuperating from a recent medical procedure and is being evaluated on a week-to-week basis as he targets a return for the team’s 2025-26 regular-season opener, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Lantz, 77, missed the Lakers’ first two preseason broadcasts—Friday’s 101-83 loss to the Phoenix Suns and Sunday’s meeting with the Golden State Warriors. Former Lakers center Mychal Thompson filled in alongside play-by-play voice Mike Trudell, while John Ireland handled the radio call.

McMenamin reported on Oct. 4, 2025, that the longtime color commentator is “week to week” but remains on track to be in the booth when Los Angeles opens the season later this month. The upcoming campaign would mark Lantz’s 39th year calling Lakers games.

A third-round pick by the San Diego Rockets in the 1968 NBA Draft, Lantz spent nine seasons as a player, including his final three with the Lakers. He joined the team’s broadcast crew in 1987, working alongside legendary play-by-play announcer Chick Hearn and, more recently, Bill Macdonald.

The preseason has also given newcomers a chance to audition. Center Deandre Ayton, making his first appearance in purple and gold, scored one point but emphasized his defensive contributions during limited minutes against Phoenix.
