ORLANDO, Fla. — The Magic opened their 2025 preseason on Oct. 5 with a 126-118 victory against the Heat, getting quick looks at several newcomers and established pieces.
Rookie guard Jase Richardson, the No. 25 pick in June’s draft, shook off early nerves to score a team-best 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting. He hit all three of his attempts from beyond the arc and added four rebounds, two assists and a steal in his first NBA action.
“There’s just a level of confidence that he possesses, reading the game and recognizing how guys are playing him,” head coach Jamahl Mosley said. “His speed is such a big advantage … he always wants to know what to do in any situation.”
Orlando projects Tyus Jones to handle most backup point-guard minutes once Jalen Suggs returns from injury, but Richardson’s ability to play on or off the ball could earn him rotation time if his aggression and shooting hold up.
Defense from Banchero, shooting from Bane
Paolo Banchero, typically lauded for his offense, made his mark defensively with three blocks in just 13 minutes. The second-year forward swatted one shot in isolation, another on a weak-side rotation and a third on a chase-down in transition.
“If he plays with that energy and effort every night defensively, it’s going to be a long night for a lot of people,” Mosley said.
Newly acquired guard Desmond Bane delivered the expected floor spacing and also pushed the tempo, creating open looks for teammates. His familiarity with former Grizzlies teammate Jones was evident throughout the contest.
Wagner sits for rest
Franz Wagner did not suit up, but the absence was for scheduled rest after helping Germany secure EuroBasket gold, not because of any injury concern.
The Magic continue preseason play later this week as they refine roles ahead of the regular-season opener.
