Guard Ryan Rollins revealed Thursday that he played most of last season with a torn left shoulder and had surgery roughly a week after Milwaukee was eliminated from the playoffs. The second-year guard said recovery took four months, and he resumed on-court work at the end of July. His first live scrimmage came last week. “I feel stronger and confident,” Rollins told reporters, noting that the shoulder’s range of motion is “a little different” but pain-free.
Head coach Doc Rivers said he will not assign traditional positions to Rollins, Kevin Porter Jr. or Cole Anthony. “They’re guards,” Rivers said after practice, adding that he is comfortable using any two of them together because the Bucks’ offense is not built around a single point guard. Earlier in the week, Rivers indicated Porter is expected to start when the season opens.
Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has been isolating in Greece with COVID-19, is scheduled to join the team when training camp shifts from Milwaukee to Miami. Rivers said the two-time MVP is due to arrive late Thursday or Friday morning. Milwaukee will remain in South Florida ahead of Monday’s preseason opener against the Heat.
Anthony missed the contact portion of Thursday’s workout as a precaution because of an undisclosed health issue, according to Rivers, who did not offer further details.
Shooting guard A.J. Green, one of the few Bucks without a new contract this summer, said he is not concerned about entering the final season of his deal. “It’ll work out how it should,” Green said, adding that he can only control his play and trust the process.
New center Myles Turner clarified comments he made on media day about finally being in “a city that wants to celebrate me.” Turner wrote on social media that the remark was aimed at his free-agency experience, not at Indianapolis or Pacers fans.
