The Los Angeles Lakers secured star guard Luka Doncic to a three-year extension on Aug. 2, 2025, the first day he became eligible to re-sign. The deal keeps him under contract through at least the 2027-28 season and includes a player option for 2028-29, allowing him to enter unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2028.
According to league sources cited by veteran reporter Marc Stein, the structure of the agreement positions Doncic to pursue a full no-trade clause in his subsequent contract. NBA rules require a player to have at least eight years of service and four years with the same franchise to receive such protection, and the clause can be included only in a brand-new contract—not an extension. By completing four consecutive seasons in Los Angeles before potentially opting out in 2028, Doncic would meet the four-year team requirement despite joining the Lakers midway through the 2024-25 campaign.
If Doncic declines his option and signs a fresh deal in 2028, he could negotiate a five-year contract projected to exceed $400 million—surpassing the approximate $340 million supermax he was on track to sign with Dallas before being traded. The Lakers, who granted LeBron James a no-trade clause after his fourth season with the organization, are expected to accommodate a similar request from Doncic.
The extension ended weeks of speculation and provides roster clarity for Los Angeles as it builds around the 26-year-old guard. Former Lakers great Pau Gasol publicly congratulated Doncic on the agreement, highlighting the optimism surrounding the franchise’s future with the All-NBA talent locked in.
