The Los Angeles Lakers began training camp on Tuesday at their El Segundo facility, but four players did not take part in the full session because of health concerns, head coach JJ Redick said after practice.
LeBron James, entering his 23rd NBA season, is dealing with what Redick described as “nerve irritation in the glute.” The coach stressed that the team will adopt a slow ramp-up plan for the 39-year-old forward to avoid aggravating the issue before Opening Night.
“It will be a slower process with him leading into the first game,” Redick noted, adding that James appeared to overextend himself during last year’s camp.
Marcus Smart participated only in modified drills because of Achilles tendinopathy. Redick expects the veteran guard to resume full activities next week.
Gabe Vincent sat out live segments as the club manages the same knee that limited him last season. According to Redick, the guard should be cleared for full contact by the end of the week and is on track to play in Friday’s preseason opener.
Adou Thiero, a rookie forward, was also limited. Redick referred reporters to information Thiero provided Monday but did not specify the injury.
Los Angeles opens preseason play Friday, giving the coaching staff a short window to evaluate who will be available for game action as the team works to build early-season chemistry.
