SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday he is willing to coach the 2025-26 campaign on an expiring contract and wait until the offseason to address his future with the franchise.

Speaking after the team’s first practice of the year, Kerr, 59, said he is “very comfortable” entering the season with one year left on his deal and noted he is in sync with general manager Mike Dunleavy and owner Joe Lacob.

“There’s no reason for discussion or concern,” Kerr said. “Let’s just see how it is at the end of the year.”

Alignment with veteran core

Starters Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler III and Draymond Green — now 37, 35 and 35, respectively — each have two seasons remaining on their contracts. Curry has called that timeline convenient for another two-year push at a championship, and there had been speculation Kerr might seek an extension that runs concurrently with theirs.

Kerr, entering his 12th season coaching the Warriors, remains the preferred choice of Curry and Green, according to team sources. The group has claimed four NBA titles together.

No in-season negotiations expected

Kerr said he does not anticipate talks during the year, a contrast to 2023-24, when he and the Warriors hammered out a record two-year, $35 million agreement in February.

“I’m not the slightest bit concerned about it,” he said. “I love my job and hope to be here several more years, but it makes sense for all of us to see where things stand when the season ends.”

Looking toward the future

The coach acknowledged that the franchise’s long-running era of success is nearing its conclusion and emphasized a smooth transition whenever it arrives.

“However this ends, it’s going to be done the right way,” he said. “If it’s meant for me to keep going, great. If the team moves on to someone else, there will be nothing but gratitude.”
