The New York Knicks and center Karl-Anthony Towns have not begun negotiating a contract extension this offseason, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said Wednesday on “The Hoop Collective” podcast.

Three Seasons Remain on Towns’ Deal

Towns, acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves last October, is entering the second year of a four-year, $220 million agreement he originally signed with Minnesota. The contract runs through 2026-27 and includes a player option for 2027-28, leaving roughly $170 million over the next three seasons.

“We haven’t heard anything about Karl-Anthony Towns getting extended,” Windhorst noted, adding that the sizable remaining salary could complicate any potential trade.

During the same podcast, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps compared Towns’ situation to Rudy Gobert’s—who was traded by Utah while still holding a large contract—rather than to Devin Booker’s recent extension in Phoenix.

Durant Trade Offer Revealed

In June, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that New York offered Towns to the Phoenix Suns for Kevin Durant at February’s trade deadline. Durant approved the idea, but the teams did not reach an agreement. Towns carried a $49.2 million cap hit last season and is slated for $53.14 million in 2025-26; Durant’s salary is $51.17 million in 2024-25 and $54.17 million in 2025-26.

Production in New York

The 28-year-old earned his fifth All-Star selection and third All-NBA Third Team honor last season, averaging 24.4 points, a career-best 12.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steal while playing 35 minutes across 72 games.

Highlights included a 44-point, 13-rebound performance in a 116-107 win over the Miami Heat on Oct. 29, the highest single-game total by a Knicks center since Patrick Ewing in 1995. Towns also became the first Knick since Carmelo Anthony in 2014 to post at least 40 points, 10 rebounds and shoot 65% in a game.

In December, he captured Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors for the first time, guiding New York to a 12-2 record while averaging 23.2 points, 14.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.

No timeline has been disclosed for potential extension discussions, and the Knicks have not commented publicly on the matter.
