Fox’s hamstring strain places Spurs’ opening night status in doubt

San Antonio Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox said Monday that a right hamstring injury makes it unlikely he will be available for the club’s Oct. 22 season opener against the Dallas Mavericks.

Speaking at the team’s media day, the 27-year-old explained he was hurt during a summer workout and will sit out the entire preseason as a precaution. “I definitely won’t be playing in the preseason, that’s for sure,” Fox said. “I don’t think I’ll be ready for opening night. But we’re going to play it by ear.”

Fox added that he feels close to full speed—already running 15 mph on a treadmill—but will defer to team medical staff before returning. Head coach Gregg Popovich has not provided a public timetable for the guard’s debut.

The eight-year veteran signed a four-year, $229 million maximum extension in July. His 2024-25 campaign ended in March after surgery on his left pinky finger, limiting him to 17 games with San Antonio following a three-team trade that brought him from Sacramento last February.

Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in those appearances, sharing the floor with center Victor Wembanyama only five times before the 7-4 star was sidelined by deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. “Victor was a big reason why I wanted to come here,” Fox said. “We know there will be growing pains, but you’d rather win through them than settle for moral victories.”

San Antonio opens preseason play Oct. 7 and concludes exhibition action Oct. 18, both games Fox is expected to miss.
