Lakers extend JJ Redick’s deal despite three seasons remaining

The Los Angeles Lakers have added more years to head coach JJ Redick’s contract even though the coach still had three seasons left on his original agreement, general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed this week.

Redick, 40, signed a four-year, $32 million deal last summer, averaging $8 million per season—one of the highest coaching salaries in the NBA. The length and financial terms of the new extension were not disclosed.

In his first year on the bench, Redick guided Los Angeles to a 50-32 record but saw the club exit the postseason in the opening round against the Minnesota Timberwolves. His rotation choices during that series drew widespread scrutiny, highlighted by Game 4, when he left the same five players on the floor for the entire second half. According to ESPN, no NBA head coach had used an identical approach in at least 25 years. The Lakers squandered a lead in that game and eventually lost the series.

The timing of the extension comes as LeBron James, who will turn 41 in December, enters the later stages of his career. The veteran forward’s contract expires after next season, leaving questions about the franchise’s long-term direction.

Los Angeles hired Redick in 2025 after his 15-year playing career and a brief stint in broadcasting. He has yet to win a playoff series as a head coach.
