The Philadelphia 76ers opened training camp on September 26 without two key pieces: second-year guard Jared McCain, who has a torn thumb ligament, and newly acquired star wing Paul George, who is still recovering from June knee surgery.

George told reporters he has resumed every activity except full-contact play. “I’m feeling stronger and stronger,” he said. “I feel a lot better now than I did at this point last year.” The next few weeks will determine when the eight-time All-Star can join team drills.

Head coach Nick Nurse plans to use George at power forward—a position where Philadelphia has limited depth behind Trendon Watford and two-way forward Jabari Walker. George noted that his ball-handling and playmaking could help fill that front-court role.

Embiid progressing, but return date unknown

Center Joel Embiid, rehabbing his own knee injury, said he feels “pretty good” yet remains without a target date for game action. “I want to play every single game,” Embiid said, adding that last season’s unpredictable setbacks were “mentally draining.” President of basketball operations Daryl Morey emphasized that medical guidance and Embiid’s feedback will direct any minutes plan.

Grimes contract talks continue

Morey sounded upbeat about reaching an agreement with restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes, despite recent reports of stalled negotiations. “I think we will get to a resolution in the next few days, hopefully,” he said. “He’s a big part of what we’re trying to do, now and into the future.”

Edgecombe set for early opportunity

No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe is expected to receive extra minutes while McCain is out. Nurse said the rookie’s season will be measured by the playing time he earns and noted that Edgecombe has focused on improving his shooting since draft night. “We need to let him play through the ups and downs,” the coach added.
