The Charlotte Hornets have signed free-agent guard Jaylen Sims, the club announced Friday, September 26. The move fills the lone vacancy on the team’s 21-man preseason roster created when Nick Smith Jr. was waived the previous day.
Contract terms were not disclosed, but the deal is expected to be an Exhibit 10, continuing a pattern for the 26-year-old. Sims accepted similar agreements with Charlotte in September 2022, 2023 and 2024.
A 6-foot-6 product of UNC Wilmington and a Charlotte native, Sims spent most of his first three professional seasons with the Greensboro Swarm, the Hornets’ G League affiliate. He earned his first NBA minutes in April on a 10-day contract, averaging 7.0 points and 2.0 assists in 18.7 minutes over six games.
Before that call-up, Sims delivered his best G League campaign, posting 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 32.9 minutes across 49 contests while shooting .441 from the field, .375 from three and .837 at the line. He also helped Charlotte’s Summer League squad capture the Las Vegas championship in July, contributing 14.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists on .551/.438/.800 shooting in six games.
The Exhibit 10 agreement allows Charlotte to convert Sims to a two-way slot before the regular season, but the more common outcome would be a preseason release followed by a return to Greensboro. If he spends at least 60 days with the Swarm, he can earn a bonus of up to $85,300 in addition to his standard G League salary.
