Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said guard Austin Reaves has outperformed every teammate during voluntary workouts at the team’s practice facility this summer.
Speaking at his preseason press conference, Redick noted that Reaves has been “the best player in the gym” whenever he has participated, crediting the 26-year-old’s physical improvement. “His body is really good right now. He’s really strong. His burst, his athleticism—it’s evident he spent a lot of time working on his body this summer,” Redick said.
Entering pivotal fifth season
Reaves is preparing for his fifth NBA campaign and the final year of his current contract. He is coming off a career-best regular season but struggled in the Lakers’ first-round playoff exit while managing a toe injury. Redick asked the entire roster to report in “championship shape,” and the coach believes Reaves has met that standard.
Expanded role alongside Doncic and James
With Luka Dončić and LeBron James expected to lead the 2025-26 squad, Reaves is projected to maintain—and possibly expand—his on-ball responsibilities after a full training camp with the two superstars.
Discussion over potential lineup changes
Some external speculation has centered on whether moving Reaves to a reserve role could bolster perimeter defense in the starting group. Redick did not commit to such a change but said the Lakers have “seven to eight” players capable of starting.
The coach also joked about Reaves’ off-court hobby, mentioning the guard carded a 65 on the golf course during the offseason. “When he’s not on the golf course,” Redick said, “he’s been the best player in the gym.”
