The Minnesota Timberwolves have entered the competition for free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, joining the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers in what is shaping up to be a three-team chase, league sources told HoopsHype.
According to reporter Michael Scotto, Minnesota turned its attention to Kuminga after failing to land LeBron James. The Timberwolves can offer the 23-year-old a starting power-forward role and their $6.06 million taxpayer mid-level exception.
The Lakers, who already have 16 players under contract, have been pursuing Kuminga for several weeks and are believed to have a longer, higher-value sign-and-trade package on the table. Cleveland is also positioned to deliver a more lucrative salary through a sign-and-trade arrangement.
Fit vs. Finances
While Los Angeles and Cleveland can outspend Minnesota, the Timberwolves’ on-court fit is viewed as attractive. Kuminga has prioritized a larger role since his well-documented frustration with the Golden State Warriors led to a trade to the Atlanta Hawks at last season’s deadline.
All three teams can offer a starting spot, leaving Kuminga to weigh financial terms against potential playing time.
Lakers Still Seeking Frontcourt Help
Even if Los Angeles secures Kuminga, the front office is expected to keep searching for additional size at center as it reshapes the roster around superstar Luka Doncic.
