Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during a workout on Thursday, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reported on X (formerly Twitter).

The team confirmed the diagnosis in an afternoon press release and said McCain is consulting hand specialists to determine treatment options.

McCain, the No. 16 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, had been working toward a full return after missing most of last season with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. Before that injury, he averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds while shooting 46.0 percent from the floor, 38.3 percent from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent at the foul line across 23 games.

Training camp opens next week, and Philadelphia’s media day is scheduled for Friday. According to data compiled by InStreetClothes.com and cited by Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports, players who sustain an in-season UCL tear typically miss about seven and a half weeks, putting a potential return for McCain in late November.

The setback comes as the Sixers continue negotiations with restricted free-agent guard Quentin Grimes, with both sides reportedly far apart ahead of the Oct. 1 qualifying-offer deadline. It is not yet known whether McCain’s injury will affect those talks.
