Cavaliers: Cleveland would acquire Watson via sign-and-trade and immediately ink him to a four-year, $80 million contract. Nuggets: Denver would drop beneath the league’s second apron by sending out Watson and receiving center Brook Lopez, wing Derrick Jones Jr. and future draft compensation. The incoming veterans would provide depth while easing the franchise’s escalating payroll.
Pistons: Detroit would take in guard Dennis Schröder using an existing trade exception, avoiding the need to send out a player or salary.
Clippers: Los Angeles would bolster its wing rotation with Max Strus and Cameron Johnson and, under the concept, remain below the luxury-tax threshold.
Purpose Behind the Concept
Swartz drafted the scenario to address each team’s immediate priorities—cap flexibility for Denver, a starting small forward for Cleveland, low-cost backcourt help for Detroit and additional perimeter depth for Los Angeles—while complying with the league’s updated collective bargaining rules.
Although the Cavaliers have been linked to Watson in recent weeks, no indication has emerged that Denver intends to move the 23-year-old unless a significant return materializes. Swartz’s outline is therefore characterized as a thought exercise rather than an active negotiation.
