Jon Wallace Explains How NIL Deals Shape Denver’s Draft Search for Role Players

The Denver Nuggets are placing an even greater premium on immediately ready role players as soaring salaries push contending clubs up against the NBA’s new tax apron, executive vice president of player personnel Jon Wallace told The Ringer.
Speaking with reporter Logan Murdock, Wallace said the explosion of name, image and likeness (NIL) money in college basketball has complicated that hunt. Attractive payouts let many prospects stay in school longer or prioritize programs that guarantee touches and freedom—circumstances that do not always prepare them for the narrower responsibilities NBA role players must embrace.
“A lot of guys take the bigger deals with more money,” Wallace said. “You have to see players who’ve already adapted to starring alongside better teammates early in their careers rather than later.”
Adaptability Over Pure Production
Wallace noted that front offices are increasingly weighing basketball IQ, effort and versatility as heavily as raw talent. On defense, he values “multiple efforts within a possession,” while on offense he looks for prospects who can space the floor, keep the ball moving and avoid hunting their own shots.
“Can you have a direct-line skill set that earns a coach’s trust right away?” Wallace asked. “That gives you the long release to expand your game.”
Nuggets’ Recent Picks Show Early Promise
Denver’s 2026 second-round selections, Trevon Brazile and Bryce Hopkins, impressed during Summer League play in Las Vegas, according to The Denver Gazette. Brazile has already secured a four-year standard contract, while Hopkins remains unsigned.

Murdock also reported that Golden State deliberated drafting 7-footer Aday Mara with the No. 11 pick last month but ultimately selected five-year college veteran Yaxel Lendeborg, Mara’s former Michigan teammate. Mara went 12th to Oklahoma City and told The Ringer he expects limited minutes as a rookie on what he called the league’s deepest roster.
