PHILADELPHIA — A Western Conference executive told NBC News that the Philadelphia 76ers were simply the team that afforded LeBron James “the best chance to win,” tipping the scales in the superstar’s prolonged free-agency process.
James, 41, considered multiple destinations over nearly a month of deliberation, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors drawing most of the public attention. Several league insiders said they were stunned when the four-time NBA champion settled on Philadelphia. One agent reacted to the decision with a single mind-blown emoji, NBC News reported.
“I would definitely say surprised,” a front-office executive who had spoken with James’ representative Rich Paul told the outlet.
The 76ers’ roster — headlined by reigning MVP Joel Embiid and rising stars Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe — ultimately gave Philadelphia the edge, according to league sources. One executive highlighted Maxey and Brown as “young engines on the perimeter,” while calling Embiid a “game-changer when healthy.”
Recruiting efforts were underway behind the scenes, including former Warriors general manager Bob Myers pitching the Sixers during an appearance on Paul’s podcast. Philadelphia’s front office also made its interest known directly to James’ camp.
James is coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds. In Philadelphia, he is expected to join a lineup deep enough to reduce the offensive burden he has shouldered for most of his career.
While James weighed his options, other NBA business largely stalled. NBC News noted growing frustration around the league, with one Western Conference executive saying James “hijacked the summer” and another describing the overall mood as “annoyed.”
The waiting ended when James chose the Sixers, a move at least one executive said boiled down to a single factor: among the teams on his list, Philadelphia offered the clearest path to another championship.
